M2.3 - Household Products

The two household cleaning products that I looked up were Clorox Bleach Lavender (concentrated), as well as Soft Scrub with Bleach Cleaner Gel.

The Clorox Bleach Lavender liquid had the following health risks: skin and eye irritation, exposure to vapor or mist may irritate respiratory tract, and sodium hypochlorite (IARC Group 3 Carcinogen). It had a health rating of 2,  which is moderate (on a scale from 1-4).
The Soft Scrub with Bleach Cleaner Gel also had the health risks of skin and eye irritation along with known health hazard chemicals of sodium hypochlorite, sodium hydroxide, and dodecyldimethylamine oxide (each with 1-5% concentration). It also had a health rating of 2 -moderate.

I was surprised that both products scored a 2 and not at least a 3 or 4 because they each seem to have hazardous chemicals that probably shouldn't be used without gloves and a face mask. What's interesting is that my parents have already decided to use more natural cleaners for our health from the Melaleuca company. I believe that everyone should be more aware of hazardous chemicals of these products with a big warning of the toxicity and health effects that each product has.

    Hi Matt!
    thank you for letting us know that the health score is 1-4. I could not find it, or I was looking in the wrong spot for it! lol
    my cleaning products both scored a 1 and I too was surprised by their score because they are killing something like germs. to see it seems like our cleaning products are softer than our shampoo and body/face wash! :)

    My products also scored high with being irritants. I think its funny that there is not any true lavender in the Windex! Im happy to hear that your parents are ready to switch their cleaning products in order to support healthier and more ethical business.

M3.4 Air Pollution

In my zip code, the top polluters include Tyco Thermal Controls L.L.C., South Bay Marble Inc., Peterson Prods., Discovery Partners Intl. Chemrx Div., and Equilon San Francisco Terminal. The major pollutants in my zip code includes Syrene, Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Acetonitrile, Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether, and Dichloromethane. Only 1 percent of houses in my zip code have a high risk of lead hazards, and there are currently no Superfund Toxic Waste sites that are on the EPA's National Priority List of Superfund sites. It's scary to know that in 1999, my country was ranked among the dirtiest/worst 10% of all counties in the U.S. in terms of pm-2.5 emissions because of Browning-Ferris Industries and Raychem Corporation. M5.4 - CCR & Water Quality

The source(s) of my drinking water in Daly City are the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir & Spillway water form the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (60% before 2017, 100% after 2017), and also groundwater produced by local Daly City wells (before 2017). The chemicals found in my water that were higher than expected, or that I did not expect to find included the Trihalomethanes, Haloacetic Acids, but are a byproduct of drinking water disinfection. My family and I do use a filter for our water from our faucet, Brita, and shower water filter to filter out anything really.
